Feature Focus: Goals

How to write effective goals as a content creator

We all have dreams and aspirations, right? Big or small, these are the things that keep us excited about life and creating content. But how do we turn these dreams into realities? Well, that's where solid goal setting comes into play.

Let's talk about how to write effective goals look at a few different goal writing frameworks that are out there.

One approach for writing goals is to remember this mantra: Keep it REAL. R for Relevant, E for Exciting, A for Achievable, and L for Love (something you genuinely care about).

Relevant: Make sure your goals align with what you truly want. They need to be connected to your bigger picture. For instance, if you're all about boosting your streaming game, setting a goal around mastering how to use a greenscreen makes perfect sense.

Exciting: Yawn-inducing goals won't get you out of bed in the morning. Your goals should light a fire under you, something that makes you say, "Hell yeah, let's do this!"

Achievable: Don't set yourself up for a fall with out-of-reach goals. Sure, aim high, but keep it within the realm of possibility.

Love: Set goals around something you genuinely care about. If you love what you're working towards, you're more likely to stick to it.

Some other goal-setting frameworks that can add some structure to your ambitions are...

  1. SMART Goals: The old faithful, SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. A goal like, "I want to consistently stream four times a week for the next three months to build up my viewer base," fits this framework perfectly.

  2. OKR (Objectives and Key Results): Loved by tech biggies like Google, you set an Objective (the goal) and define up to 5 Key Results (the measurable steps that show you're reaching your goal). For example, the objective could be "Increase viewer engagement," with key results like "Increase chat messages per viewer by 20%" or "Grow the number of returning viewers by 15%."

  3. WOOP (Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, Plan): This science-backed mental strategy helps map out your wishes (goals), the outcomes you desire, any obstacles you might face, and the plan to overcome these obstacles.

Remember, there's no one-size-fits-all approach to goal setting. What works for one person might not click with another. The key is to try different methods and find what suits you best.

Goal setting might seem a tad overwhelming at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's a real game-changer. So, why not give it a go? Set some goals, make a plan, and watch as you start to turn those streaming dreams into reality.

Happy streaming and goal setting!
